In part III, we've learned the following:

Attitudes toward inequality and authority in society differ remarkably among the members of a group. Hierarchical, “Belief in a Just World” values correspond to political conservatism; an egalitarian worldview, on the other hand, is associated with the political left.

Moral stances toward inequality in society do not correspond well or at all to self-interest. Yet these positions do relate to a parallel set of opposing attitudes concerning inequalities within the family. Conservatives prefer a hierarchical disciplinary strategy; liberals believe in egalitarian child-rearing practices. Thus, it's not by chance that both parents and diplomats speak of “carrots” and “sticks.” Neither is it coincidental that some parents and politicians are predisposed to believe that incentives or punishments are more effective than the other—regardless of the circumstances.
